Anonymous text chat is great for easing into a conversation — no pressure, no camera, just words. But every so often a conversation clicks hard enough that typing starts to feel like a wall between you and the other person. That's what in-chat video calling is for: a one-tap way to go from text to face-to-face, without leaving the conversation you're already having.
What Is In-Chat Video Calling?
It's a video call layered directly on top of your existing Chatrio text chat — not a separate mode, not a new match. You're still talking to the same stranger you were texting a second ago. Either person can start the call at any point during the conversation, and it ends automatically the moment either side skips, disconnects, or leaves.
This is different from Random Video Chat, Chatrio's dedicated video-first matching mode. In-chat video calling doesn't match you with anyone new — it just adds a camera to the conversation you already started.
How to Start a Video Call
Once you're connected with someone on /chat, look for the camera icon at the top of the conversation, next to the more-options menu. Tap it and Chatrio sends your match a video call invite instantly.

- Get matched and start chatting as normal.
- Tap the camera icon in the top bar.
- Your match sees "wants to start a video call" with Accept or Decline.
- Once accepted, your camera streams live — no page reload, no leaving the chat.
While you're waiting for them to respond, you'll see a "Calling…" screen with your own camera preview in the corner, plus a button to cancel the invite if you change your mind.
What Your Match Sees
Your match gets a banner across the top of their chat: your name (or "Stranger") wants to start a video call, with two buttons — Accept and Decline. Nothing opens automatically. Nobody's camera turns on without them explicitly tapping Accept. If they decline, you're simply back in the text conversation like nothing happened.
Controls: Mute, Camera, and Ending the Call
Once the call is live, you get three controls docked at the bottom of the video: a mute toggle, a camera on/off toggle, and an End Call button. Turning your camera off keeps the audio call running — useful if you want to step away from the screen for a second without hanging up entirely. Muting works the same way in reverse.
Ending the call is always one tap, and it never ends the underlying text conversation — you'll land right back in the chat, message history intact.
You Can Still Text During the Call
A lot of video chat products force you to choose between seeing someone and talking to them in text. Chatrio doesn't. While the video call is active, your message history and the message box are docked to the side of the video, so you can send a link, a laugh-out-loud reaction, or a quick note without interrupting the call. There's also a chat-visibility toggle next to mute/camera if you'd rather have the video take up the full screen for a moment.
Privacy: What Actually Happens Behind the Scenes
The video and audio streams connect peer-to-peer between your browser and your match's browser using WebRTC — Chatrio's server only relays the initial connection setup (the "signaling"), not your actual video or audio. There's still no account required to use video calling, and just like text chat, nothing about the call is recorded or stored. When the call ends, it's gone.

Do I need to create an account to use video calling?
No. Video calling works the same way the rest of Chatrio does — anonymous, no sign-up, no email required.
What happens if I skip to a new chat partner during a video call?
The video call ends immediately and automatically, along with the text conversation. You're moved to a fresh match with nobody's camera on until you both choose to start again.
Can my match record the call?
Chatrio doesn't provide any built-in recording feature, and streams aren't stored on our servers. As with any video call on any platform, we can't control what happens on someone else's device, so use the same judgment you would on any video call with a stranger.
Why can't I see a video icon when I'm chatting?
The camera icon only appears once you're actively paired with a match — it won't show up while you're still waiting to be connected.
Is this the same as Random Video Chat?
No — in-chat video calling escalates a text conversation you're already in. Random Video Chat is a separate mode where video starts the instant you're matched, with no text-first step.
