Don't just answer questions — offer something unprompted. A weird fact about your day, an opinion you hold that surprises people, a thing you've been thinking about. Boring people never volunteer anything.

React to what they say, not just what they mean.

If they say something interesting, don't just say "oh cool." Tell them WHY it's interesting to you. Specificity is what separates good conversations from forgettable ones.
